2011 Handi-Racker was developed for a customer who requested my help. A young man came into my gun shop and was having difficulty operating his pistol. He wanted me to weld or bolt some tabs on the back of the slide of his pistol. He also wanted a little T handle that he could put in his pocket after he racked the slide. I told him that I didn’t want to weld on or modify his gun but to come back in a couple of weeks and I would have an answer for him.
When he left, I realized that I could not let him down. I had no idea what I was going to do, but I had to help him. I gathered several different pistols from the shop and studied them for a couple days. I determined that they all had one characteristic. The slide of the pistol could be pulled from the back, but it could also be pushed from the front. I know that seems so obvious now that the world is no longer flat. lol
I walked to a storage area where I saw a piece of plastic left by a former owner in a rafter. I cut it up and bought a cheap mill from Harbor Freight. I stuck in a bit and started cranking the handles. The first unit worked but I was not happy. Too big to fit in pocket and no way to eject shell. I cut a couple of openings for a fingerhold and an ejection port. Still not happy. I had to do the Keep it Simple Stupid method. So, I milled a few more. I basically hacked off the back and added to the front, pushed against the counter and boom, there it was.
It took the whole of two weeks to get it done, but sure enough in he comes. I handed him the first Handi-Racker. He used it and his face lit up! He reached into his pocket and handed me a $20 bill. I refused his payment and told him that I did it to help him, and I was happy to do it.
A few days later I started to think that other people may have the same issue. I also realized there were lots of other uses, like Clearing Jams, Loading, Unloading, Disassembly, and more. Several nights of not sleeping went by. I started doing some searches on the internet and nothing like this came up. I spent many nights doing patent searches, no results. I talked with my wife, and we decided to take a gamble and on March 29, 2012, we applied for a patent.
The first Handi-Racker was made for a little pocket pistol. Specifically, the Kel-Tec P3AT 380. I modified it to fit the Ruger LCP 380 and had a few made. I sold some locally and on Ebay. Requests started coming in for other models. Before I knew it there were 3, 4, and then 5 to choose from. Small, Medium, Large, XL and one for the Beretta’s and it’s Clones that have a tapered muzzle and exposed barrel.
January of 2014, Handi-Racker debuted at SHOT Show and we started getting serious about a dealer network. By January of 2015 we had a dealer network of over 200 dealers’ nationwide. Then Cabela’s placed it in all their retail outlets and online. Big year!
Nov. 24th, 2015, we were awarded Patent # 9,194,636.
2016 SHOT Show we introduced a new lineup to the nearly 300 dealers. We combined the Small and Medium unit to create the Handi-Racker 2 Compact unit and merged the Large and XL Handi-Racker to make the Full Sized unit. Now two Handi-Rackers will fit 95+% of the pistols on the market. The Beretta unit was dropped from the lineup.
The new HR2 line has the same great Manufacturers Suggested Retail Pricing of $29.99 and operates more guns per unit. Win win.
2017 Shot Show Handi-Racker introduces lower MSRP of $24.99. The new Injection molded HR2 reduced our cost and now comes in Safety colors and gripping ridges. Safety Orange is the color for the Full-Sized unit, and he Compact is now Safety Green.
2019 The Beretta unit returns but it is still machined and has no retail packaging. MSRP remains $29.99
April of 2020. The world shuts down. Markets crash. Handi-Racker sales are down but we are still helping people. As always, we try to ship in 24 hours, six days a week.
2022 Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s joins/rejoins our over 430+ retail dealers so we may help more friends.
2022 also births the Handi-Holster. After being frustrated with lot’s of patent infringers, we decided to build the best and most versatile Racking Magnetic Holster on the market. http://www.handiholster.com
The Rest of the Story is still being written. I can’t wait till we help our first millionth shooter.
